Finding The Right Flooring For Busy Indoor Venues

Retail flooring -

The leisure sector is a broad category, and the use of venues within it will vary enormously. For some, the summer is a particularly busy time. A pub in a tourist hotspot, a wedding reception venue and a summer-oriented sports facility, such as a cricket or tennis club, are all examples of this.

However, other venues may get rather less attention in summer. The indoor nets at a cricket club may get less use in summer (unless it rains) because the outdoor ones are the most relevant to use. Some sporting facilities might get very little use at all, such as those dedicated to winter sports, or to those not played in summer, like football and rugby.

Not So Busy In Summer

Although the latter may still have some sections that are used in summer (such as for the aforementioned wedding receptions), there will be other places that are used a great deal less. This means now is the time to carry out any new flooring work before summer ends and they come back into regular heavy use.

This will be true, for example, at professional football clubs across the country, from the big boys in the Premier League to the National League.

Some may even have some major new plans that will require a lot of new flooring as they construct whole new stands in the years ahead (like Leeds United) or new stadiums (such as Manchester United and Birmingham City).

This doesn’t just apply to famous football clubs. For example, proposals have now been published for a huge new indoor ice arena in Manchester, which will become a new home for the Manchester Storm Ice Hockey team.

While an ice hockey venue is entirely indoors and a football stadium is outdoors in pitch-facing areas, in every case, there will be areas under the stands which will be busy with hundreds, if not thousands, walking across the floors every week. The key question is what sort of flooring may be suited to this.

The Qualities Your Flooring Needs

Clearly, for instance, carpets will not be suited to general public concourses, where a concrete floor or tiles may be all that is necessary. However, in executive areas, suites under the stand and sit-down dining areas, a little more comfort and aesthetic quality will be in order, if only to enable such areas to stand out as classier areas of the building.

These areas can be real money-spinners, which means they are sure to be part of new or expanded sports venues. This is true for the new Manchester ice arena, where a family restaurant and posh sports bar will be among the features.

In such locations, carpet planks can be very appropriate. The specific qualities they require will be aesthetically pleasing, but also for them to be hard-wearing to deal with heavy footfall. Acoustics are not likely to be a problem in an environment with a lot of social chatter, but it will certainly help any club or organisation’s reputation for them to be eco-friendly.

Great Carpet Options

We have plenty of products that fit this bill. An example is the Interface Works Freestyle Carpet Planks, which measure 250 x 1,000 mm, are 7.2 mm thick and have a wear classification of 33. They are also made using recycled materials.

This particular product comes in calming grey colours, but you may want some brighter shades, not least if they reflect the colours of your company livery or sports team.

A good option for this may be the Interface Employ Dimensions carpet planks, measuring 250 x 1,000 mm. These can come in colours like blues, red and greens while it, too, has a wear classification of 33 and uses recycled and recyclable material.

Another possibility is the use of Burmatex Tivoli Carpet Planks, which again measure 250 x 1,000 mm. These have a heavy commercial use wear category, making them very suitable for especially busy indoor areas. They are also available in 26 different colours. This is useful for multicoloured schemes, where you can combine two or more hues.

Products That Last For Many Years

Burmatex products all feature recycled material, but just as important is the fact that it is recyclable at the end of their life.

Of course, carpet planks for busy indoor areas, while they will not last forever, will stay in great condition for a long time. The Burmatex example above, for instance, has a ten-year warranty, while the Interface Works Freestyle carpet has a 15-year warranty.

Not only does this provide value for money, but it means you can be confident that you will not have to deal with the (albeit brief) disruption of laying new carpets again for a long time. That means you can then turn your attention (and furnishing budget) to other items.
