Carpet Tiles: Everything You Need To Know When Redecorating

carpet tiles

Carpet tiles are becoming increasingly popular, both in commercial and domestic settings, as they offer both a practical and luxurious solution to interior design.

If you’re considering installing carpet tiles in your home or business premise, here is everything you need to know:

What are carpet tiles?

Carpet tiles are small, individual pieces of carpet that can be fitted together to create different patterns and installed in all sorts of spaces.

The modular pieces can be fitted in any sequence, allowing homeowners to have a truly unique flooring in their living room or hallway. It also enables companies to reflect their image with tiles in their brand colours.

There are several advantages of installing carpet tiles, as opposed to a wall-to-wall carpet, including the fact individual tiles can be replaced without having to take the whole carpet up. Therefore, if one area of the floor becomes stained, the tile can be removed and swapped with a new one. Whereas, the entire carpet would need to be replaced.

Another benefit is that they are easy to install and are generally simple to clean and maintain. What’s more, as you only need to buy the right number of tiles for the space, you end up with less waste, making it a better choice for the environment.

Different types of carpet tiles

There are many different types of carpet tiles available to choose from, so homeowners and businesses can get the right flooring for their needs.

Here are some of the most popular:

Loop pile

A loop pile carpet tile involves looping the wool together, which gives a smooth feel. These are best for high-traffic areas, such as offices or hallways, thanks to the tight loops, which makes them highly durable.

Higher and lower loops can also be combined, which gives the flooring varying textures throughout.

Cut pile

Cut pile carpet tiles involve cutting the wool loops so the pile is upright. As the pile is cut, this makes it softer than a loop pile, and gives it a more luxurious, plush feel to it, making it a better choice for formal spaces. It can appear darker than loop piles, so it is important to bear this in mind when choosing a colour.

Cut and loop pile

This type of carpet tile is a combination of both cut and loop piles. This allows for a carpet with lots of different patterns, such as swirls, so is a good choice for those who want to add a bit of character to their flooring with patterns.

Fibre bonded carpet

Fibre bonded carpets are very robust, as the fibres are drawn through and bonded to a backing web. As a result of this unique feature, it is less likely to fray than other types of carpet tiles.

Twist pile carpet

A twist pile carpet tile is made from tightly wound wool. As a result, it is a good choice if you are looking for a durable floor, as it is resistant to flattening, thanks to its dense and firm surface.

It is not, however, soft underfoot, and has a slightly coarse texture, making it a good option for high traffic areas, as opposed to a bedroom. It can be made with various materials, including synthetic yarns or a blend, making it a popular choice.

Needle felt

Needle felt carpet tiles are manufactured by a process of barbed felting needles interlocking synthetic fibres. This leads to a very dense flooring that is stable, durable and feels like thick felt. This long-lasting carpet is a sensible option for an office building, which sees lots of traffic.

Saxony tiles

You might also want to consider Saxony tiles, which have their fibres tightly twisted at the base and cut at the top, giving it a plush, soft texture. This makes it a good choice for bedrooms, as it also has longer tufts of yarn to create a deep pile that is luxurious underfoot.

Installation

Anyone considering carpet tiles should also consider how it is installed, as there are different types of adhesives and tackifiers, depending on the specific requirements of the room and the type of tile used.

They might also want to consider using tiles with recycled content or picking ones that can easily be recycled, particularly if they are a business, as this will demonstrate they are doing their bit for the environment to slow down climate change.
